With the rise of social media, it is more important than ever to present yourself in a professional manner online. If you are a confident, savvy businessperson, a cropped, grainy picture from your family reunion 5 years ago just won’t do. You need a high quality, professional head-shot that depicts you the way you want to be perceived.

Here are 5 tips for an impressive professional portrait:

  1. What do you want your picture to say about you? Are you all business or do you like to keep things lighthearted? When deciding whether to smile or keep it more serious and choosing your location keep in mind what image want projected.
  2. Wear flattering, professional attire. Men should wear a suit coat, sweater, or nice dress shirt, and women should wear a conservative blouse or tailored jacket that flatters her figure.  Long sleeves are recommended.
  3. Choose colors and accessories that don’t distract from your face. Bold solid colors are best. Avoid flesh tones, pastels, and busy patterns. Jewelry is fine, but again, don’t make it the focal point.
  4. Location, location, location. This goes back to the image you are trying to project. An outdoor backdrop with vibrant trees says something different than a solid studio background or the corner office with views of the city. Select a location that is attractive but not overpowering.
