3. INFORM MOM & DAD:
This is probably one of the most helpful recommendations, simply because mom and dad most likely have had pictures taken before that just didn’t hit the mark. You must communicate with the parent and include them in your repertoire to the extent you need. In some cases it is advantageous to have parents leave the room. Mom and dads have influence over their children, their expectations for behavior around strangers may be influencing the child and inhibiting his demeanor, consequently impeding the child’s personality from coming out. Removing parents to a nearby room within earshot, or asking them to sit on the sidelines might be just the trick in getting the child or children to participate more candidly. Often, parents are tempted to engage with their children during a shoot to help get their kids to cooperate. This is particularly likely if the kids are being somewhat aloof or uncooperative. By nature, parents want their kids to listen, be respectful and behave appropriately—especially when they are expecting great family portraits, however when mom and dad try to help, the slightest hint of frustration or angst, may impede the natural expression that we're aiming for. . . At the beginning of a session, I explain to mom and dad that I’ve got them covered. They are free to sit back and relax. They are allowed to hang around, but they aren’t allowed to intervene between the kids and me unless I specifically ask for their help. This not only ensures I have the opportunity to connect with their kids the way I’m hoping to, but it also alleviates a lot of pressure from Mom and Dad. |
